BLOCKBUSTER NEWS, If true

If true, then Trump must be impeached.

If true, then those boys from Covington Catholic High School are racists.

News used to be facts. Now…not so much.

The phrase, if true, has become a preface for slander, rank speculation, and an excuse for using the power of social media to destroy someone’s reputation.

One Congressman, when asked, said there was nothing wrong with repeating stories, which may be nothing more than slander, when you preface it with the phrase, if true.

If we use the Congressman’s standard, then one could say anything about anyone and preface it with the phrase, if true. What a jolly good way to destroy someone’s reputation! Why didn’t we think of it earlier?

Let’s step aside from the breathtaking demise of the press for a moment and consider more things that would be blockbuster news, if true.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1) If true, then the Big Bang theory is not true.

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:16) If true, then slanderous reporting is a sin.

The phrase, if true, can be used in a multitude of ways. It can be used to spread gossip or to debunk a political argument.

It’s hard to know what’s true and what’s fiction today. Many will tell you the Bible is just an irrelevant book of history or rules. It isn’t applicable today. Some pick and choose which Scriptures they believe and discard those that don’t support their thinking on a subject.

Many today believe global warming is our biggest threat or Trump is. They fret and tweet in an effort to do their part to make the world a better place. Sensing imminent demise, they look for hope.

We all do. We all become hopeless when we look down at the mess of our circumstances. Some of us have discovered, you have to look up to find hope.

Jesus said, ” I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Luke 14:6)

Jesus claims he is the way. If true, there is no other way.

Jesus claims he is the truth. If true, there is no other truth.

Jesus claims he is the life. If true, there is no life without him.

Blockbuster news, if true. Right?

It is true, friends. That’s why he was crucified. He was too big a threat to the world order.

As Priscilla Shirer said, “Jesus didn’t come to take sides. He came to take over.”
