My Baby Spits Up During Tummy Time

“We don’t do tummy time because every time I lay him on his tummy, he spits up!”

I hear this from moms and grandmoms a lot.

Most babies, regardless of how much they spit up, can be successful at tummy time. I’ve helped many babies tolerate it—even those with feeding tubes.

The key is to do these simple steps:

  1. Wait approximately 30 minutes after your baby has eaten to lay them on their tummy
  2. When you lay them down, always have their head slightly higher than their hips

Okay, I realize many infants are rarely awake 30 minutes after feeding. I recommend counting as tummy time, the time you hold them on your shoulder during burping. Sometimes burp them on your right shoulder and sometimes on your left. This helps them use different neck and body muscles and helps prevent flat spots on the head and neck tightness.

When your baby is a bit older, say 3 or 4 months old, they’ll likely be awake after 30 minutes and you can do some supervised tummy time then.

Many babies continue to spit up even after waiting some time after feeding before tummy time. For those, do tummy time with them in a slightly inclined position with the head a bit higher than the hips. More about that here.

Tummy time builds the strength and postural control your baby will need to sit up and crawl. Don’t skip it! If you have more questions, contact me on the website or post a question on my Instagram feed. Trust me, you aren’t the only mom who is having problems. 🙂
