The Magic of Butterflies at the Beach

When I’m muddled and needing inspiration, I often take a drive. Sometimes I have a destination in mind and other times, I just roam.

A few weeks ago, during one of the final days of fall along the Redneck Riviera, I found myself at the beach. During many of my times of trial, God has led me here to breathe the salt air and ponder the magnificence of His creation.

The water glimmered like a sea of blue diamonds, the air felt as crisp as a sheet off the clothesline, and the air as warm as a mother’s embrace. I strolled with my toes in the shallow, clear waters and marveled at it all.

After an hour or so, I headed back to the truck. I paused at the rinse station to wash the sand off my feet and, as I looked down to complete my task, something whooshed past my ear.

I glanced up and saw monarch butterflies. One after the other, steady and determined, flying east to west. It was magical as I watched them weave among the sea oats. Not one of them ever appeared lost. They traveled fearlessly and with a clear purpose.

At that moment, ‘neath the monarch migration, God whispered to my heart, “Do as they do. Go where I lead with clear purpose and be fearless.”

As I drove home, I realized I had been head down, busy with the mundane task of brushing sand off my feet, and almost missed one of God’s magical moments.

My reminder to myself, and to you, this week is to look up and be encouraged. Whether it’s a butterfly, a cloud formation, or a golden maple tree, God speaks to us through His magnificent creations.

Here’s a brief video of what I saw and I pray it blesses you as it did me.
